Y2K Challenge Prophesised in the Holy Quran:
Contributed by Roger Bissessar (Trinidad and Tobago)
[Proves that the Holy Quran is the ultimate source of knowledge, wisdom and guidance for mankind in the new millennium]

Printer-friendly Version

The Holy Quran is the ultimate source of knowledge, wisdom and guidance for mankind, providing the most beautiful lessons within its pure pages. As we move into the new millennium, the latent knowledge and messages contained within the eloquent parables of the Holy Quran will be unveiled to provide further guidance for mankind.

On the dawn of the new millennium, there is one challenge that is veiled in uncertainty throughout all corners of the globe. With all of the scientific and technological progress over the last century, there is still tremendous uncertainty over the potential consequences of Y2K non-compliance. Mankind is advancing cautiously towards the year 2000, believing that we are prepared for Y2K issues, but not totally convinced.

Society has received numerous assurances from all aspects of modern civilisation, such as the computer industry, financial sector, international airlines, cruise ships, petrochemical/energy sector, nuclear plants, the military and governments that systems are Y2K compliant, and that there will be a smooth transition into the year 2000. But are they really ready? No one knows for sure.

The Holy Quran has provided guidance to mankind for over 1400 years, and will continue to do so until the end of time. It is no surprise therefore that the Y2K issue is clearly prophesised in the Holy Quran, with the state of world affairs accurately described. In Chapter 74, Al-Muddaththir, verses 11-31 it states:

"Leave Me alone with him whom I created
And gave him vast riches

I will make a distressing punishment overtake him

I will cast him into hell.
And what will make thee realise what hell is?
It leaves naught, and spares naught.
It scorches the mortal.
Over it are nineteen.

and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith

What does Allah mean by this parable?
Thus Allah leaves in error whom He pleases
And guides whom He pleases

And this is naught but a Reminder to mortals."

The potent words of this Makkan revelation accurately describe the state of affairs of mankind in the latter days.

The first aspect of this revelation is reference to the number 19. Computer programmers and analysts have highlighted the root cause of the Y2K problem as being linked to the number 19. Earlier in this century programmers eliminated the number 19 from date processing to save valuable computer memory. Two digit systems for date processing will interpret date change over from 99 to 00 as 1999 to 1900. Four digit systems will achieve compliance with date change over from 1999 to 2000.

The second aspect of the revelation is that the problem ‘leaves naught, and spares naught.’ This clearly indicates that no country or society with technological advancement will be left untouched. All will be affected by the Y2K problem.

The Holy Quran speaks of the number as a trial for mankind. There is an undercurrent of uncertainty about the potential consequences of Y2K non-compliance. At the end of the day, this problem was caused by man, and it will be resolved by man. We must have faith in our latent potential and ability to resolve this issue. Our faith in Allah must be our source of strength at times of uncertainty.

The third aspect of the revelation is that ‘this is naught but a Reminder to mortals.’ The Y2K issue highlights the mortal nature of man, his imperfection and vulnerability. In contrast, when we study the work of Allah, we see perfect order, harmony and equilibrium. In Chapter 67:3 of the Holy Quran it states:

"Thou seest no incongruity in the creation of the Beneficent.
Then look again: Canst thou see any disorder?"

The laws of the Divine Being highlight his perfection. Mankind will rise above the Y2K challenge, but indeed the problem has highlighted our inferiority and imperfection.

Significant technological advancement, progress and development will be achieved in the new millennium. The ultimate source of advancement and progress is in understanding the messages contained within the verses of the Holy Quran. The pure and potent words of the Holy Quran will be the vital source of nourishment for mankind in the new millennium, and will be essential for mental, moral and spiritual advancement and progress.
