Summary of Chashma-i-Maarfat:
15 May, 1908

Printer-friendly Version

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Sahib’s book entitled Chashma-i-Ma’arfat (‘Fountain of Enlightenment’) was published on May 15th, 1908. The chain of events that led up to its writing is rather a long story.

In December 1907, the Arya Samaj convened a Public Meeting of Religions, in which they invited dignitaries from various religions to prove, on the basis of their beliefs, "Which religion’s book is the divinely-revealed scripture?" At the insistence of the Arya, Hazrat Mirza Sahib agreed to write an essay on the subject representing the Muslim school of thought. This lecture, which was read out on his behalf by Maulana Nuruddin Sahib and Dr Mirza Yaqub Baig Sahib, was published along with Chashma-i-Maarfat. Its essence was that saints and prophets have been raised in every country and nation. The Muslims can be at peace with the Arya if they show respect to our saints and prophets, and to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in particular, just as we respect their saints and prophets. Hazrat Mirza Sahib went on to shed light on the subject of jihad. Next, he came to the central theme and thereby inundated the audience with a river of wisdom and knowledge. He explained that mere ancientness (as presented by the Arya in support of the Vedas) is not sufficient proof for a religious book’s purported divinity. Such a book can be considered divine if it proves its superiority over human discourse. Only the Holy Quran possesses this distinctive feature in present times. Following this, Hazrat Mirza Sahib expounded upon the distinctive qualities of the Holy Quran at length. His lecture focused on the allotted subject with great civility and gravity, with absolutely no words hurtful to the Arya therein. Rather, an offer of peace was extended to them. It was, therefore, most unfortunate that the presentation made by the final speaker of the meeting, an Arya by the name of Dr. Charan Jeeve, was replete with vile abusiveness towards the prophets of the Bible and the Holy Quran. The crassness with which this man conducted himself and the invective he hurled against the Holy Prophet Muhammad severely wounded the feelings of the Muslims in the audience. When the Ahmadi delegation returned to Qadian and related the happenings to Hazrat Mirza Sahib, he was profoundly distressed and grieved. Since his greatest weapon were his writings, he immediately set about writing a book in refutation of the allegations and objections of the Arya.

Hazrat Mirza Sahib has arranged Chashma-i-Ma’arfat into sections. In Section One, comprising the refutation of the false claims made by the Arya regarding the excellence of the Vedas, he definitively refutes the teachings of the founder of the Arya Samaj regarding the eternal existence of matter and soul, Niyog [Webmaster’s note: Niyoga was a practice advocated by the Arya Samaj, as a religious doctrine, allowing a wife who was childless from her own husband to form a temporary sexual connection with another man for the sake of procreation.], transmigration of souls, etc. He compares these teachings with those of the Holy Quran and proves the falseness of the Vedic beliefs with cogent arguments. He also explains at length the international nature of the Holy Quran. Section Two comprises of the refutation of the attacks made by the Arya lecturer on the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet. Hazrat Mirza Sahib has devoted a Third Section to reviewing the qualities of Islam that are not to be found in other religions. One quality he discusses is the manifestation of clear signs proving the existence of God. In this context, he mentions a few such signs which are mentioned in the Holy Quran, and which were fulfilled at the hands of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). He also mentions some signs that were manifested at his own hands as a result of his obedience to the teachings of the Holy Quran and to the Holy Prophet. However, he adds: "All these manifestations did not transpire because the intent was to express my personal greatness, but because God desired to settle the matter of Islam conclusively with the whole world." The profoundness of Hazrat Mirza Sahib’s writing, and the abundance of insights and knowledge that flow from his pen, combine to make this book a true ‘Fountain of Enlightenment’ for its readers.
